Conservative-Bloc coalition blocks independent investigation of infrastructure spending
OTTAWA – The Conservatives teamed up with the Bloc Quebecois to prevent Canadians from hearing the truth from Parliamentary Budget Officer Kevin Page and ousted Conservative candidate Gordon Landon at a committee today.
Gerard Kennedy, Liberal Critic for Infrastructure, Cities and Communities, tried to enlist members of the Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities to shed light on long delays and partisan exploitation in infrastructure stimulus spending and promised job creation.
Mr. Kennedy had brought forward two motions for action by the committee. One was to invite Mr. Page to discuss his knowledge and analysis of the government’s infrastructure spending, and the other was to invite Gordon Landon, York regional Councillor for the Town of Markham, to discuss his knowledge of the practices of the Conservatives regarding riding-level spending on infrastructure projects.
“This government is trying to hide the failure of its job creation program, and the Bloc is helping them,” said Mr. Kennedy.
“Mr. Page has publicly criticized this government for withholding the information he needs to do his job of determining whether the government is spending what it says it is. And Mr. Landon was dumped for his candour about the pork-barrel politics that goes on with this Conservative government.
“Canadians deserve to hear independent facts, and it is disturbing that government members are afraid to bring them forward. It is fair to ask, what is this government hiding?,” concluded Mr. Kennedy.

La coalition bloquiste-conservatrice entrave l’enquête indépendante sur les dépenses d’infrastructure
OTTAWA – Les réformistes-conservateurs ont uni leurs forces avec le Bloc Québécois pour empêcher les Canadiens de connaître la vérité de la part du directeur parlementaire du budget, Kevin Page, et ont empêché le candidat conservateur Gordon Landon de se faire entendre par un comité permanent aujourd’hui.
Gerard Kennedy, porte-parole libéral responsable de l’infrastructure, des villes et des collectivités, a tenté de mobiliser les membres du Comité permanent des transports, de l’infrastructure et des collectivités pour qu’ils fassent toute la lumière sur les longs retards et le favoritisme dans les dépenses d’infrastructure et de création d’emplois.
M. Kennedy avait présenté deux motions demandant à ce comité de prendre des mesures. L’une demandait que M. Page soit invité à exposer sa connaissance et son analyse des dépenses d’infrastructure du gouvernement, et l’autre demandait que Gordon Landon, conseiller régional de York pour la ville de Markham, fasse part de sa connaissance des pratiques des conservateurs en matière de dépenses d’infrastructure à l’échelle des circonscriptions.
« L’actuel gouvernement tente de cacher l’échec de son programme de création d’emplois et le Bloc lui vient en aide », a déclaré M. Kennedy.
« M. Page a reproché publiquement au gouvernement de lui avoir refusé les informations dont il a besoin pour faire son travail, qui est de déterminer si le gouvernement fait bel et bien les dépenses qu’il prétend faire. Et M. Landon a été abandonné en raison de sa franchise sur le favoritisme qui est une habitude du gouvernement conservateur.
« Les Canadiens méritent d’entendre des faits provenant d’une personne indépendante et il est préoccupant que les membres du gouvernement soient effrayés de les présenter. Il est normal de le demander – qu’est-ce que ce gouvernement cache-t-il? », a conclu M. Kennedy.
